Requirements

Entry is based on a bachelor, graduate certificate, graduate diploma, or bachelor with honours qualification (or overseas equivalent).
English language requirements must also be met.
Rule A: You have completed a Bachelor qualification (AQF Level 7) in any discipline.
Rule B: You have completed a Bachelor qualification (AQF Level 7 or overseas equivalent) in a relevant discipline. Relevant disciplines include, but are not limited to: Data Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, Mathematics, Software Engineering, Statistics.
Rule C: You have completed a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or Bachelor with Honours (AQF Level 8 or overseas equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
Rule D (On-campus international students only): You have completed a Bachelor qualification from an overseas institution in any discipline. You must be studying full-time at the UNE Sydney campus on a fee-paying basis.
You must meet the Inherent Requirements in order to complete this course.
Mandatory intensive schools on campus may be a requirement of some of the units in this course.
All admissions are subject to UNE's Admission, Credit and Enrolment Policy.

Yes. If you're seeking a career change, you can enter the course with no background in IT and graduate ready for employment in a broad range of IT positions in private industry, government agencies or research organisations.

How long does the Master of Information Technology take to complete?

The course takes 1, 1.5, or 2 years to complete full-time depending on your entry rule, or up to 6 years part-time. It consists of 16 units (96 credit points), and advanced standing may reduce total study time.

What topics and skills will I develop in this course?

You will cover the essential elements of information technology, such as computer programming, database management systems, web technologies and software development. You will also have opportunities to study specialised topics such as computer networks and security, artificial intelligence, management information systems, user experience design and web programming, and work with industry-leading programming languages such as Python, JavaScript and SQL.

Can I exit the course early with a qualification?

Yes. You can exit early with a Graduate Diploma in Information Technology if you choose not to complete the full master's course at a stage where you satisfy the requirements for the Graduate Diploma.

Where and when can I start the Master of Information Technology?

The course is available online and at the Armidale campus in Trimester 1 (February 2026) and Trimester 2 (June 2026). The Armidale campus does not offer Trimester 3 (October 2026) intake, while the online mode is available across all three trimesters. The Sydney campus offers places in Trimester 1 and Trimester 2 for international students. The CRICOS code is 047297A.
