The Master of Justice and Criminology takes 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time without advanced standing. With advanced standing, the duration reduces to 1–1.5 years full-time or part-time equivalent. The program consists of 192 credit points in total.
For domestic students, the full-fee place costs AU$29,760 per annum (2026 annual fee). For international students, the fee is AU$39,360 per annum (2026 annual fee). In addition, a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) of up to AU$373 maximum applies for 2026. Eligible domestic students (Australian citizens or holders of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa) may apply to defer payment via the FEE-HELP loan scheme.
Yes. Successful completion of the RMIT Graduate Certificate in Justice and Criminology (GC195) guarantees entry into the Master of Justice and Criminology (MC223) with 48 credit points of advanced standing, equivalent to 0.5 year full-time study. Note that any advanced standing received for the masters program is not transferrable to an exit award.
You must have successfully completed an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification), OR have undertaken at least 5 years of work experience or professional practice in a related field. If applying via the work experience pathway, you must submit a CV and a personal statement detailing your experience. There are no prerequisite subjects and no selection task required. You must also meet RMIT's minimum English language requirements.
The Master of Justice and Criminology is offered with intakes in February (Semester 1) and July (Semester 2). For Semester 2, 2026, applications open 10 March 2026. For Semester 1, 2027, direct applications open on 3 August 2026, with Orientation Week 22–26 February 2027 and classes beginning 1 March 2027. All applicants should apply directly to RMIT using RMIT's online application system.
Core subjects focus on program evaluation, applied research skills, law and justice policy, justice management, law, and criminological theory. You can select elective subjects from a range of social science streams including justice studies, psychology and human services, global communities, public policy and management, human rights, and research. Some subjects are offered online, giving you flexibility to design a study plan to meet your needs. You may also be able to undertake internships, field projects, and simulated activities representing real workplace scenarios.
