To be eligible, you need a recognised Bachelor of Science degree with an equivalent average mark of 50% that includes subjects in the areas of biochemistry, cell medical biology, molecular biology, microbiology, immunology, or an equivalent field. If English is not your first language, you must also meet the University's English Language Requirements, with accepted tests including IELTS, TOEFL, PTE, Cambridge, and OET.
The indicative course fee for a full-fee paying place is $60,811 (2026), with a session fee of $15,203 (2026). However, in 2026, domestic students may be eligible for either a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) or a UOW-subsidised fee reduction of up to 75% off the fees listed.
The course starts in both Autumn and Spring sessions. For Autumn 2026 (starting 2 March 2026), the application deadlines are 9 December 2025 for international students and 31 December 2025 for domestic students. For Spring 2026 (starting 27 July 2026), deadlines are 5 May 2026 for international students and 31 May 2026 for domestic students.
Graduates are highly sought after for roles in health, agriculture and diagnostics. Specific career roles include Clinical Research Coordinator, Forensic Scientist, Laboratory Analyst, Medical Biotechnologist, Medical Technician, Pathology Scientist, Patent or Policy Officer, and Research Scientist. With more than 400 biotechnology companies and some 600 medical device companies in Australia alone, there are strong employment prospects.
The degree exposes students to emerging technologies such as the use of drones, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and coding in science data collection and analysis, and the responsible conduct of research. Students will also receive intensive training in current biotechnology and its application to medicine, agriculture and molecular biology, with tutorials and laboratory-based practical work. The degree also integrates graduate work practice skills allowing you to translate your skills into career ready attributes.
