Common Questions
Students must complete 12 compulsory credit points of coursework, comprising MCGY5111 Creative Work Seminar 1 and MCGY5112 Creative Work Seminar 2, as well as 6 elective credit points from the University pool of units, which includes specialist analytical methods, professional development units and discipline-specific subjects relevant for research students.
Prospective students must first lodge an Expression of Interest notice, uploading a preliminary research proposal of at least 1500-2000 words, a one-page CV, and supplementary evidence of expertise (e.g. music scores, links to past performances, samples of academic writing). Applications are open all year round, but should be submitted at least 6 weeks prior to your intended start date. Closing dates are 31 October for Research Period 2 and 30 April for Research Period 3.
Candidates organise and present their creative work in the form of a recital, lecture recital, recording or other appropriate form, demonstrating independence of thought, critical awareness and interpretative capacities, and high potential as a scholarly musician.
There is no separate tuition fee cost for the coursework units of study you will undertake; it is part of the tuition fee for the course.
There are two research periods available: Research Period 2 runs from March to June, with enrolment between 1 February and 31 March and commencement no later than 31 March; Research Period 3 runs from July to September, with enrolment between 1 April and 31 August and commencement no later than 31 August. Separate scholarship application deadlines also apply.
