Instrumental Specialisation
Prepares students for school-based instrumental/vocal teaching, including professional placements, observation of teaching practice, and a focus on teaching, conducting, practical instrumental knowledge, leadership, arranging and orchestration skills.
Studio Specialisation
Prepares students for private studio-based instrumental/vocal teaching.
Common Questions
The course offers two specialisations: the Instrumental Specialisation, which prepares students for school-based instrumental/vocal teaching and includes three professional placements that contribute partially to VIT registration; and the Studio Specialisation, which prepares students for private studio-based instrumental/vocal teaching with a focus on one-on-one or small group lessons and includes two professional placements along with a range of electives.
Students can select from three capstones: Music Performance, Music Performance/Teaching and Learning Research, or Professional Practices.
Professional practice is completed in a variety of settings including community organisations, schools, studios and Suzuki classes. The Instrumental Specialisation includes three professional placements, while the Studio Specialisation includes two professional placements.
This course is for those with a Bachelor of Music or equivalent, practicing musicians, and professional music educators who seek to develop a deep theoretical and practical understanding of instrumental pedagogy, professional instrumental teacher practices and performance related to evidence-based teaching and learning approaches and methods.
Specialist electives include areas such as Leadership in Schools, Band Direction, Orchestral Conducting, Choral Direction, Piano Pedagogy and Piano Repertoire, and Teaching Aural Musicianship.
