The Master of Philosophy within the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health provides the opportunity for students to pursue independent research in the following disciplines: Biological sciences, Chemistry, Earth and environmental science, Health science, Medicine, and Nursing.
To be eligible, you need either an Honours degree with 2nd Class Division 2 or higher, or a coursework master's degree with an equivalent average mark of 60+ or a GPA of 2.8 out of 4. Candidates with a coursework master's degree or a 4-year Bachelor Honours degree in the same discipline may be granted up to 24 credit points of advanced standing for the coursework component.
The course has two intakes per year. For 2026, the Autumn session starts 2 March 2026 (application deadlines: International 9 December 2025, Domestic 31 December 2025) and the Spring session starts 27 July 2026 (application deadlines: International 5 May 2026, Domestic 31 May 2026). For 2027, the Autumn session starts 1 March 2027 and the Spring session starts 26 July 2027.
The Master of Philosophy is 2 years full-time, or part-time equivalent. As a full-time student, you can expect to commit around 48 hours of study per week, including class time and independent study.
Yes. If you have completed prior studies or relevant professional experience, you can request course credit or subject exemptions to reduce the duration and cost of your program. Specifically, candidates with a coursework master's degree or a 4-year Bachelor Honours degree in the same discipline may be granted up to 24 credit points of advanced standing for the coursework component of the Master of Philosophy.
