Master of Philosophy (Information Technology)

The Master of Information Technology offers three specialisations: Business Analytics, Management Information Systems, and Artificial Intelligence. Each specialisation has compulsory courses and a course list from which students select 40 units. Students may also choose No Specialisation and select from a broader list of electives.

International applicants who do not speak English as a first language must demonstrate they meet the University of Newcastle's English proficiency requirements. The minimum IELTS overall score required is 6.5, with a minimum section score of 6.0. Further information is available in the English Language Proficiency for Admission Policy.

The program has three intake points per year: Trimester 1 (27 January 2026), Trimester 2 (11 May 2026), and Trimester 3 (17 August 2026). Students can study at the Newcastle campus, Sydney CBD campus, or online.

Graduates may qualify for roles including Business Analyst, Database Developer, Project Manager, Systems Analyst, Web Developer, and Software Developer. The program prepares graduates to work across areas such as electronic commerce, information systems, games development, technology management, health informatics, and business systems and management. Yes. The program provides foundation IT skills for entrants with limited IT experience. It is also suited to experienced IT professionals wanting to enhance their skills. A Graduate Certificate in Information Technology is also available to study and can be used as a pathway into the masters program.
