About This Course

This degree is for graduates who have completed four-years of Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited study, fulfilling an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 8 sequence in psychology or an international equivalent. Applicants will have demonstrated competent completion of the APAC Level 2 Pre-Professional Competencies during their psychology study. The primary aim of the Master of Professional Psychology is to provide a one-year comprehensive program of study of the professional practice of psychology including assessment, intervention, communication and ethics. This aims to prepare candidates for a final year of supervised internship in the field of professional psychology, prior to applying for general registration as a psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia. The Master of Professional Psychology is an APAC accredited, AQF Level 9 Masters by coursework degree. The Master of Professional Psychology provides one year of full-time education in the professional practice of psychology that:forms the foundation for professional psychologist practice, building on the existing knowledge and skills base acquired as part of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited four-year undergraduate coursetakes an evidence-based approach based on the scientist-practitioner modelrequires students to develop and demonstrate the level 3 core professional competencies as outlined in the APAC accreditation standards. Teaching methods include a combination of lectures, workshops, skills training, online and supervised work-based practicums, both at the University's Northfields Psychology Clinic and at external placements. General Requirements

Domestic Students

A four-year, or three-year plus a fourth-year, Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited sequence in psychology within the last 10 years. Applicants must also be eligible for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) as a provisional psychologist.
Places in this course are limited. Entry is competitive and based on academic merit and personal suitability.

Compulsory Work Based Placement:

This course requires a total of 300 hours of compulsory work-based placements, completed over 30 weeks (at 10 hours per week) throughout the degree.

Domestic applicants with overseas qualifications:

UOW recognises a range of overseas higher education qualifications. Your qualifications will be assessed for equivalence to Australian qualifications and the admission requirements for this course. Documents issued in a language other than English must be accompanied by an official English translation.
