Common Questions
The Master of Research is delivered over 18 months full-time or 36 months part-time, and is worth 36 credit points in total.
To be eligible, there must be appropriate supervision available for your research topic, and you must have completed one of the following: a Bachelor Degree (AQF Level 7) in the same discipline as your proposed research; a Bachelor Honours Degree (AQF Level 8) in any discipline; a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma (AQF Level 8) in any discipline; or a Masters Degree (Coursework) (AQF Level 9) in any discipline. All admissions are subject to the Higher Degree by Research Procedure.
The program combines independent research with up to nine credit points of targeted coursework. Students must pass 27 credit points of thesis units and 9 credit points of coursework units, which include required units such as Research Methods and Skills for Research Students PG and Applied Theories and Methods of Research PG, plus a restricted choice unit selected from a range of discipline-specific options.
Graduates are equipped for a wide range of research-focused roles across academia, government, industry, and the not-for-profit sector. Potential career paths include Research Assistant or Associate, Policy Analyst or Advisor, Innovation or Strategy Consultant, Scientific Writer or Communicator, Data Analyst or Research Consultant, and PhD Candidate, among others.
Most domestic Higher Degree by Research students are supported by an Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset Scholarship and are not liable for fees up to the standard course duration. Students can find out more about their eligibility on the UC website.
