Applicants must have qualified for a Bachelor honours degree (first or second class) or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary educational institution. Applicants who hold a Bachelor Honours (first or second class) can enter the Master of Research degree without surrendering their Honours qualification, instead electing to continue into the Master degree, with Honours remaining as an exit award.
Curtin requires all applicants to demonstrate proficiency in English. For this course, the required IELTS Academic scores are: Writing 6.0, Speaking 6.0, Reading 6.0, Listening 6.0, and an Overall band score of 6.0.
Australian citizens, permanent residents and New Zealand citizens who are successful applicants of a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) program are eligible for a tuition fee exemption under the Australian Government's Research Training Program (RTP), covering up to two years of full-time equivalent study for Master of Philosophy programs.
The course develops skills including: demonstrating mastery of theoretical knowledge and reflecting critically on its application; investigating, analysing and synthesising complex information, problems, concepts and theories; generating and evaluating complex ideas and concepts at an abstract level; designing, using and evaluating research and research methods; communicating and presenting a coherent and sustained argument; and designing, evaluating, implementing, analysing, theorising and disseminating research that makes an original contribution to knowledge.
The course is offered on campus at Curtin Perth, with intakes available in Research Term 1 and Research Term 2 of 2026. The course can be completed over one to two years of full-time or equivalent part-time study.
