Common Questions
Students can choose a research project from aviation-related disciplines that include operations, safety, management, economics, and tourism. A supervisor with specialist knowledge in the relevant discipline will be appointed to guide and mentor each student.
The program requires students to complete between 18 and 24 Units of Credit of advanced coursework as part of their supervised research. It is a requirement of the award that all coursework is completed within the first year of enrolment and must be passed at first attempt.
The application process has three steps: first, check the minimum eligibility requirements for research degrees at UNSW; second, find a potential supervisor by emailing your CV, academic transcripts and research descriptions/proposals to a potential supervisor and cc'ing the Postgraduate Research Administrator and Postgraduate Coordinator; third, once the research project is agreed upon by both the applicant and the supervisor, the supervisor will advise the applicant to submit a formal online admission application.
The MPhil Aviation is designed as an alternative to BAv Honours for students returning to study after a period away (e.g., in the workforce), domestic and international students who would like to obtain experience and qualifications in conducting research, and students who have limited background or knowledge in aviation and would like to pursue a career in this area.
UNSW offers a range of prestigious scholarships for postgraduate researchers, including annual stipends, living allowances, tuition fee coverage, travel scholarships and supplements, supporting both current and new postgraduate research candidates. Additionally, the Faculty of Science offers a Science PhD Maternity Scholarship (up to $5,000) for women research students who suspend enrolment to have a child, and the Prof. Joseph P Forgas PhD Travel Award (AUD $10,000) to support international research travel.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
