Students can choose from seven majors: Aquaculture Science and Technology, Environmental Earth Science, Environmental Management, Fisheries Science and Management, Geology, Global Change Biology, and Tropical Biology and Conservation. Note that the Cairns campus only offers Environmental Earth Science, Environmental Management, Global Change Biology, and Tropical Biology and Conservation majors, while all seven majors are available at the Townsville campus.
This course requires work-integrated learning (WIL) activities such as placements, fieldwork, internships or industry-partnered projects. The hours vary by major: Aquaculture Science and Technology requires 8 hours; Environmental Earth Science requires 64 hours; Environmental Management requires 8 hours; Geology requires 80 hours; and Tropical Biology and Conservation requires 52 to 127 hours depending on subjects. Additional WIL is required for the Professional stream.
Applicants need an AQF Level 7 bachelor degree in science with a minimum GPA of 5.0, or equivalent. If English is not your native language, you must also meet the minimum English language requirements for this course, which are classified as Band 1.
The indicative annual cost for international students is $43,952+, which is an estimated annual tuition and student services and amenities fee for a full-time study load. These fees are displayed for 2026 and are subject to change in following years. Scholarships and financial aid are available if eligible.
Yes, the research project component of the Master of Science (Professional) is a pathway towards a PhD by research program. Students can undertake their own independent research project, which provides the foundation for further doctoral study.
