Research unit in a specialised area
A capstone research unit in a specialised area of your choice, usually completed alongside your second field placement. This unit enables critical thinking skills and evidence-based practice tools as students produce a piece of independent professional research.
Common Questions
Yes. All students, including those enrolled online, are required to participate in on-campus learning for a minimum of 20 days/150hrs over the duration of the course. This requirement is met via attendance at the mandatory intensive schools associated with some of the core units for online students. This requirement is stipulated by the Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards (ASWEAS).
Students must complete 1000 hours of professional fieldwork (clinical) placements in diverse social work settings in Australia and internationally. Clinical placements are supervised by experienced practitioners who support students in developing the skills needed to practice social work effectively in complex environments, with disadvantaged and marginalised individuals, groups, and communities.
Before starting your first field placement, you must meet a number of requirements including vaccinations for Category A Health Care Workers (NSW Health), a current National Criminal History Check, and a NSW Working with Children Check. Some of these take some time to complete, so UNE encourages students to commence processing these as soon as they have enrolled in the course.
Yes. This is an approved Student Income Support course, and eligible students may apply for Youth Allowance or Austudy.
Entry requires a 3-year undergraduate qualification (AQF Level 7 or overseas equivalent) from a recognised tertiary institution in a discipline other than Social Work, with the degree including 48 credit points (1 year of full-time study, or part-time equivalent) in any Social Science discipline. Applicants must have completed at least one year of full-time equivalent study in Social and Behavioural Sciences. Alternatively, entry may be based on an international qualification in social work not meeting AASW eligibility. English language requirements must also be met.

Honestly I was lost when I first started looking at Australian colleges. There are just too many options and every agent gives you different info. A friend told me about FindTheCourses and within a week I had shortlisted 3 programs that actually matched my budget and visa situation. My advisor Sanjay was super helpful — never felt like I was being pushed into anything.
