About This Course

Prepare for a rewarding career as a secondary school teacher with the practical experience offered through a Master of Teaching (Secondary Education) at Victoria University. You will gain significant workplace experience to prepare you for the real world of teaching. Through our extensive partnerships, you will undertake supervised teaching placements and have access to many professional-experience opportunities. Areas of study and learning outcomes covered include: design and technology (wood, metal and plastics, textiles, food, robotics); Critically examine historical and contemporary issues in post-primary education at a local, national and international level; Review different pedagogical theories and academic concepts of teaching that support the diversity of learners found in post primary educational settings; Analyse the literacy and numeracy learning needs of students across the full range of abilities including students with disabilities and special learning needs. General Requirements

International students:

You may also be eligible for course 'credits', where you are granted a unit or units towards your qualification for equivalent previous study or work experience, so you can graduate sooner.
Completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or equivalent) in two discipline areas that meets AITSL specialised requirements available at: https://www.aitsl.edu.au/docs/default-source/default-document-library/accreditation_guidelines_2021_17-feb-2021_contents_web_final.pdf?sfvrsn=9276dd3c_0 Applicants will also be asked to complete an assessment of their non-academic attributes. Applicants with a Bachelor's degree from countries other than Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada or the Republic of Ireland will be required to complete IELTS (or equivalent): Overall 7.0 with Listening 7.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 6.5, Speaking 7.5. Applicants will be assessed on academic performance.
Prior to entry into the second year of full time study, students in this course will have to sit the LANTITE test in order to demonstrate that their literacy and numeracy skills are within that expected of the top 30% of the population in Australia. The LANTITE test is a national government requirement for initial teacher education programs. Students should note that they will be subject to a Working With Children Check before practice placements, in accordance with Department of Education and Training policy. Satisfactory achievement of the benchmark for literacy and numeracy is a requirement to graduate from the program. This course is professionally accredited. Applications for credit can only be made on the basis of formal learning that is considered to be equivalent in a professionally accredited course at another institution.

How many times per year can I start the Master of Teaching (Secondary Education) at Victoria University?

Thanks to the VU Block Model, where you study subjects in four-week 'blocks', there are five opportunities across the year to start your course.

Can I defer my place in the Master of Teaching (Secondary Education) if I am not ready to start?

Domestic students in postgraduate courses, including postgraduate certificates, diplomas and masters by coursework, can defer studying for work, travel or personal reasons for a maximum of 12 months, as long as they do this before enrolling.

Can I apply for credit for prior study when enrolling in the Master of Teaching (Secondary Education)?

Yes, you can apply for credit for any relevant units you have completed in your current or previous course(s). To apply, you will need to supply academic transcripts and unit descriptions. Any documents in another language will need to be translated and certified. Credit is automatically applied for any units that you have completed at Victoria University.
