Domestic students may be eligible to apply for a Research Training Program-supported place, which provides a tuition fee offset funded by the Australian Government's Research Training Program, with Southern Cross University supplementing the remaining cost. If unsuccessful, students may be required to pay fees. International students are charged $31,827 per annum unless a tuition fee waiver has been approved by the Dean, Graduate School.

A request for a tuition fee offset for international students can only be approved by the Dean, Graduate School, provided there is support from the Principal Supervisor, DHDRT, and Associate Dean (Research). Criteria considered include the academic quality of the student, appropriate English proficiency (minimum IELTS 7.0 in Writing, no band below 6.5), expected research outcomes, quality of project, fit with the supervisory team's research areas, available faculty resources, and evidence of financial self-support if not on a scholarship.
The Masters by Thesis must show evidence of competence in research and scholarship, including reviewing literature in a critical and focused manner, deploying analytic, comparative and critically reflective skills, gathering and analysing material and interpreting results in an informed and competent manner, and utilising and justifying appropriate methodologies, techniques and processes. The thesis must be clearly, accurately and cogently written, suitably documented, demonstrate originality, and show a thorough understanding of the field of study.
