About This Course

Exercise scientists help people prevent and recover from injury and disease, help maximise athlete performance and promote wellbeing and healthy ageing. They use a person-centred approach to educate individuals and communities about the benefits of exercise and encourage lifelong positive exercise behaviours. In this course, you will gain the knowledge and skills in the pillars of exercise science – including biomechanics, physiology, psychology, behaviour change, and motor control and learning. You'll build strong interpersonal communication skills, which are key attributes of person-centred care and practice. This degree is also a pathway to our Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology, which will broaden your capabilities and enable you to use exercise to treat chronic conditions.

General Requirements

Minimum ATAR/selection rank of 70 (or equivalent via an accepted entry pathway)
No essential WACE subjects required
Desirable subjects: Maths Applications ATAR, Human Biology ATAR, Physical Education Studies ATAR
English language requirement: IELTS Academic — Writing 6.5, Speaking 6.5, Reading 6.5, Listening 6.5, Overall band score 7
Accepted alternative English tests/qualifications may also be used to meet this requirement
Fieldwork requirements: Student declaration, criminal record screening and clearance, immunisation, first aid
Curtin course switcher: Course weighted average (CWA) or semester weighted average (SWA) of at least 60% in most recent studies
UniReady: Successful completion of the UniReady Enabling Program
STAT: Written English and either Multiple Choice Verbal or Quantitative will be assessed

What professional accreditation can I obtain after completing this degree?

Graduates of the Bachelor of Science (Exercise and Sport Science) are eligible to apply for accreditation with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).

What practical experience will I gain during this course?

Your professional experience will include at least 140 hours at the site at Cockburn Aquatic and Recreation Centre, and through industry partnerships spanning elite sport, strength and conditioning, corporate health, clinical exercise physiology and paediatric exercise. Through Curtin's partnership with Fremantle Football Club, you may also work alongside some of Australia's top athletes in your professional placement.

Is this degree a pathway to further postgraduate study?

Yes, this degree is a pathway to the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology, which will broaden your capabilities and enable you to use exercise to treat chronic conditions. If you perform well during your course, you can also apply to complete an honours degree, which involves undertaking a research project to contribute to scientific knowledge while practising as a professional exercise or sport scientist.

Yes, this course requires active participation in practical classes, which involve disrobing, and palpation of muscles and bony landmarks for learning anatomy, anthropometry and other skills. This can be a physically and mentally challenging course, and prospective students are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the inherent requirements before applying.
