UWA offers three main HDR programs: the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), an advanced research degree involving independent, supervised study and a thesis that makes an original contribution to knowledge, available across all UWA disciplines including creative practice options; Professional Doctorates, designed for experienced professionals combining advanced coursework with a research thesis tailored to industry or leadership needs; and the Master of Philosophy (MPhil), a program of independent, supervised research where you'll demonstrate advanced, integrated knowledge in your field, with creative practice options also available.

UWA offers a range of generous scholarships, including stipends valued at $35,000 per annum (2024). Domestic applicants may be eligible for a Research Training Program (RTP) Fee Offset, and some international applicants can access fee scholarships. The 2026 Mid-Year Domestic Scholarship Round is open for applications until 31 May 2026.

Finding a supervisor and project that align with your research interests is an important first step in your Higher Degree by Research. Supervisors provide guidance on your topic, project design and dissertation, while existing projects may offer a clear path in your chosen field. The Graduate Research School provides induction, candidature advice, assistance and professional development opportunities to ensure you can make the most of your research journey. Students are also supported to undertake research internships with industry partners or join existing programs, and many have industry experts as part of their supervisory team. UWA also operates more than 75 research and training centres and attracts the majority of WA's university research funding.

Yes, UWA offers two forms of recognition for outstanding research. The Robert Street Prize is awarded annually and recognises the most outstanding PhD thesis at UWA, celebrating academic excellence at the highest level. Additionally, exceptional research theses may be nominated for an Honourable Mention in the Graduate Research School Dean's List, a prestigious recognition of research excellence.
