Common Questions
Study Abroad and Exchange participants cannot enrol in closed units under any circumstances. These include all 0 credit point units, all 7000-level units, all Capstone units, all Full Work Integrated Learning (WIL) units, all Internship units, all Open Universities Australia units, all Professional experience/practice placement units, all PACE units, all Research units (undergraduate and postgraduate), all units offered by Macquarie University College, and a range of specifically named units across faculties such as ANTH3024, MMCC3012, PICT8016, and many others. Please check the full Closed Units list before applying.
There are three unit access types: Open Access Units (Access Type: Open), where you can enrol without restrictions and units are generally introductory-level, on campus, and for credit; Approval Required Units (Access Type: Conditional), where you can apply to enrol but must be approved first by submitting a Special Approval (Waiver) Request via eStudent; and Closed Units (Access Type: Not Allowed), where you cannot enrol under any circumstances, including PACE units, internships, research projects, or restricted professional placements.
To submit a Special Waiver Request, you need to add your chosen unit to your study plan in eStudent, then select 'Request Waiver/Special Approval', upload supporting documents, and submit. If approved, you will be eligible to enrol in your chosen unit.
Study Abroad and Exchange students must maintain full-time enrolment of 3–4 units per session in order to satisfy visa conditions. Additionally, at least 75% of your program must be taken on campus.
The enrolment timeline is as follows: 3–4 months before the session start, shortlist units and check restrictions; 6 weeks before the session start, add units via eStudent when enrolment opens; before orientation, submit any Special Waiver requests if needed; during Orientation Week, finalise your study plan in the week before classes begin; and by Census Date (Week 4 of session), which is the last day to withdraw without academic or financial penalty.
