Course Overview

About This Course

The Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation is a free tertiary pathway into university. It is for school leavers with no ATAR, and those who have not achieved an entry-level ATAR. It is also suitable for mature-aged students seeking an alternate entry into a bachelor's degree. With one-on-one support, students will develop tertiary literacy skills, particularly written, verbal and communication skills, and general academic skills that will prepare them for university and beyond.

Eligibility

Entry Requirements

General Requirements

A selection rank of at least 45 (ATAR plus any applicable adjustment factors); OR
A minimum of 24 points in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma; OR
New Zealand Year 13 NCEA Level 3 results, identifying university entrance attainment; OR
An appropriate score in an Avondale University-approved entrance exam; OR
The International Big Picture Learning Credential; OR
A Senior Secondary Certificate (with no ATAR) — applicants must not be a current year 12 (or equivalent) student and must be 18 years or older at the time of commencing their course.
An Australian Certificate III, or an equivalent New Zealand certificate, as approved by the Director, Student Administration Services (VET pathway); OR
Successfully completed at least 2 units of a Bachelor's degree; OR
Completed a bridging or enabling course, or another recognised tertiary preparation course; OR
Successfully completed at least three units of Avondale's Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation (university pathway).
Overseas secondary or higher education qualification — refer to the Admission Policy (HE) for specific minimum academic entry standards and English language proficiency requirements.
If a Senior Secondary Certificate has not been completed, an eligible applicant may sit an Avondale University-approved entrance exam.
In exceptional circumstances, an applicant may be admitted based on equivalent qualifications or work and life experience as assessed by the Course Convenor or delegate and/or the DVC Academic.
English language proficiency: Applicants whose primary language is not English must demonstrate proficiency through achieving the required IELTS score for the course planned after completion, or one of the other ways outlined in Appendix 2 of the Admission Policy (HE).

Career Opportunities

Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation students who successfully complete a minimum of three units receive guaranteed entry and credit into an Avondale undergraduate degree. Students who successfully complete a minimum of four units also have the opportunity to graduate from the Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation.

Is the Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation really free?

Yes, the Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation is described as a free tertiary pathway into university. Students may also be eligible for a Fee-Help loan, and Commonwealth Supported Place offers are available for some courses.

Can I receive credit towards a bachelor's degree after completing this certificate?

Yes. Depending on the units chosen, it is possible for students to receive full credit into most Avondale degrees including Teaching, Arts, Business, Ministry and Theology, and partial credit into Nursing. Students who successfully complete a minimum of three units receive guaranteed entry and credit into an Avondale undergraduate degree. It is recommended that students contact the Course Convenor for advice on selecting elective units for maximum credit.

How long does it take to complete this course?

Students can complete the Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation in one semester studying full time (0.5 year). Part-time options are also available with an equivalent duration. The course consists of 4 units requiring 24 credit points for completion.

Can international students enrol in this course?

Yes, this course is available to international students. Students on a student visa must study on campus in full-time mode to meet student visa requirements and cannot enrol by distance mode. International students on a visa other than a student visa with no study limitations may choose to study full-time or part-time in any study mode. The course is also available online for international students who want to study from their home country.

Do I need to complete all four units to transfer into a bachelor's degree?

No. Students can transfer to their planned degree after successful completion of 3 units, but will not graduate from the Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation. Students completing all four units will graduate with the Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation.
