University of Melbourne English Language Bridging Program Preparation (UMELBP Prep)

The University of Melbourne English Language Bridging Program Preparation (UMELBP Prep) is a 10-week academic English course delivered by Hawthorn-Melbourne, the University of Melbourne's endorsed English language pathway provider since 1986. Designed for students who don't yet meet the entry score for the main UMELBP, the course builds the foundational academic literacy skills needed to progress into that program with confidence.

Students develop active listening and note-taking through lecture-style input, build academic vocabulary, and practise collaboration, negotiation and presentation skills through seminar-style tasks. The writing strand introduces two academic essay genres, while the reading strand focuses on comprehension and annotation of authentic academic texts. Students are also introduced to the Learning Management System (LMS) tools used throughout Australian university study.

Assessment combines a mid-course exam, a research assignment, two graded essays, a collaborative speaking task, an end-of-course exam and a presentation seminar; students must achieve a minimum 60% aggregate score (at least 55% per combined component) and 80% attendance to pass.

Successful completion of UMELBP Prep grants direct entry into the main UMELBP, without needing to resit an English test. The course is delivered face-to-face at Hawthorn-Melbourne's campus at Level 1, 333 Exhibition Street, Melbourne.
