What is the Australian PR points test?
Australia's skilled migration program uses a points-based system to select applicants for permanent and provisional skilled visas. Points are calculated across factors such as age, English ability, skilled work experience, education and Australian study.
The minimum score to be eligible is 65 points. However, meeting the minimum does not guarantee an invitation — for most occupations the effective cut-off is higher and changes with each invitation round.
How to increase your PR points
- Improve your English — moving from Competent to Proficient adds 10 points; Superior adds 20.
- Gain more skilled work experience — points increase at the 3, 5 and 8-year marks; Australian experience scores more generously.
- Complete 92 weeks of CRICOS registered courses — adds 5 points and satisfies the Australian study requirement.
- Study in a regional area — adds another 5 points and strengthens state nomination prospects.
- STEM Master's or PhD in Australia — adds 10 points.
- Professional Year or NAATI community language — 5 points each.
- Seek state or territory nomination — Subclass 190 adds 5 points; Subclass 491 adds 15.

Australian study, regional study and specialist STEM qualifications all depend on choosing the right provider.
