Living costs

For 2026, the Department of Home Affairs sets the living-cost figure for a single student at AUD $29,710 for 12 months — up from $24,505 in May 2024.

Tuition fees

You must show the first year of tuition. Fees differ dramatically between universities, TAFEs, private colleges, and metro vs regional providers.

Family members

Travelling with a partner? Add AUD $10,394. Each dependent child adds AUD $4,449. School-age children may also need schooling cost evidence.

Return travel

You must include the cost of return travel to Australia for yourself and each accompanying family member.

A note on “genuine access”

Meeting the dollar figure is only half of it. The Department also assesses whether funds are genuinely available — through a stable savings history, an approved education loan, or a credible sponsor. Funds that appear suddenly weaken the application and feed into the Genuine Student (GS) assessment.
