The Bachelor of Property Development, Investment and Valuation (Honours) is a comprehensive undergraduate degree designed to prepare students for professional careers across Australia's largest industry sector — property. The course covers the full spectrum of the property profession, focusing on three interrelated disciplines: property development, property investment, and property valuation. Students develop the ability to understand all factors around property ownership, management, investment, valuation, and development, while also building critical thinking, professional writing, research, and analytical abilities. The Honours component deepens academic rigour through an independent research project, setting graduates apart in the competitive job market.
The degree is fully accredited by the Australian Property Institute (API) and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), providing graduates with an internationally recognised qualification. This accreditation also provides the academic foundation required for membership to API and RICS, and eligibility to pursue Certified Practising Valuer (CPV) status after meeting work experience requirements. Employers of graduates include major property and real estate firms such as JLL, CBRE, Knight Frank, Colliers, Cushman & Wakefield, GPT Group, Stockland, Mirvac, Opteon, Herron Todd White, Preston Rowe Paterson, and government bodies including state valuer-general offices, local councils, and land tenure agencies.
The course is designed for students who are passionate about the built environment, finance, economics, and urban development. It suits those who are investment-focused, analytically minded, and interested in shaping Australia's cities and property markets. Graduates are equipped to work across residential, commercial, industrial, retail, and government property sectors in roles spanning valuation, asset management, development management, funds management, and property advisory.
Australia's property industry is the nation's largest employer, underpinning the entire economy as a necessity for all businesses and individuals. Whether the economy rises or falls, there is a constant need for skilled professionals who can manage, protect, and grow property assets. Housing demand is projected to continue outpacing supply in major cities, driving persistent demand for qualified development managers and valuers. There is currently a notable skills shortage in the residential valuation sector, and growing demand in commercial and industrial property, creating strong career prospects for new graduates across all states.
The three-discipline focus of this degree — development, investment, and valuation — sets it apart from narrower property courses and gives graduates the flexibility to pivot across multiple career paths throughout their professional lives. The API and RICS accreditation means the qualification is recognised not just in Australia but in countries including Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Malaysia, and Singapore, opening up international career opportunities. With strong employer connections embedded directly into many programs through Employer of Choice networks and Work Integrated Learning placements, graduates often enter the workforce with industry contacts and practical experience already established.
For school leavers, entry typically requires completion of Year 12 (or equivalent state certificate such as VCE, HSC, SACE, WACE, or QCE) with a competitive ATAR or equivalent selection rank. Most programs require a minimum result in English (such as a study score of 25+ in English or Band 2 in NSW HSC English) and may recommend prior study in Mathematics, Business Studies, or Economics. Some providers do not use ATAR as the sole selection tool and instead assess applicants on individual subject performance. Entry is generally competitive, with eligible applicants ranked by academic achievement and, in some cases, adjustment factors for equity or subject bonuses.
For non-school leavers and mature-age applicants, entry can be gained through prior tertiary study (completed or partially completed undergraduate subjects), relevant vocational qualifications, or the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT). A personal statement of 300–500 words outlining motivation and suitability may be required or recommended at some institutions. Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) may be available for applicants with relevant formal, non-formal, or informal work experience in the property, real estate, or built environment sector.
For international students, English language proficiency must be demonstrated through an approved test such as IELTS (typically an overall score of 6.0–6.5 with no band below 5.5–6.0), TOEFL iBT (minimum 79–80), PTE Academic (minimum 58), or Cambridge English Advanced (minimum 176). Overseas secondary qualifications are assessed for equivalence to Australian Year 12 standards. Some institutions also offer foundation studies programs or diploma pathways for students who do not yet meet direct undergraduate entry requirements.
This course may be offered in different study modes depending on the university, campus location, course structure and student type. Students should check the available delivery mode before applying, as not every study option is available at every institution.
On-campus study is the traditional mode of delivery where students attend classes, lectures, tutorials, workshops or seminars at the university campus. This option may suit students who prefer face-to-face learning, access to campus facilities, networking with classmates, practical workshops, group projects and direct engagement with academic staff.
Some universities may offer programs fully online or with online subject options. Online study can be attractive for students who need flexibility due to work, family, location or other commitments. Online study may suit domestic students, working professionals or students who want to study from outside Australia.
Hybrid or blended study usually combines online learning with some on-campus classes, workshops, intensive sessions or practical components. This mode may suit students who want flexibility but still want some face-to-face interaction. The exact structure varies between institutions.
Programs in Australia may have different intake structures depending on the university. The most common intake systems are semester, trimester and block mode.
Many Australian universities follow a two-semester academic calendar. The main intakes are commonly Semester 1 (around February or March) and Semester 2 (around July). Semester-based study usually allows students to complete a set number of subjects over approximately 12 to 14 weeks.
Some universities use a trimester system, which generally provides three study periods a year — around February/March, June/July and October/November. Trimester study may provide more flexibility and may help some students complete their course faster.
Some institutions may offer selected subjects or programs in block mode, where students focus on one subject at a time over a shorter, more intensive teaching period. Block mode may suit students who prefer concentrated learning or working professionals managing study around employment.
Some online or professionally focused programs may offer more frequent start dates or flexible entry points throughout the year. Students should not assume that every course has monthly or multiple intakes — availability depends on the institution, course structure and student type.
