The Graduate Diploma in Design is a postgraduate qualification — typically completed in one year of full-time study — that provides advanced, professionally oriented training in design practice, theory, research, and communication. It sits at AQF Level 8 and is designed for students who already hold an undergraduate degree and wish to deepen their design expertise, pivot into a specialised design discipline, or build the academic credentials necessary to progress to a Master of Design. The program explores design as both a process and a practice, covering areas such as design history and theory, graphic communication, spatial design, interaction design and UX, visualisation, branding, product design, and sustainable design — depending on the institution and the specialisation pathway chosen. Studio-based learning, project work, and design research are central to the experience.
Australia's creative industries are growing strongly, with demand for skilled designers increasing across sectors including technology, retail, media, government, architecture, and healthcare. The number of illustrator, web, and graphic design jobs in Australia is projected to increase substantially, reflecting businesses' growing reliance on design to communicate, compete, and innovate digitally. A Graduate Diploma in Design offers a flexible entry point into advanced design study for graduates from any discipline — not just design — making it ideal for career changers, internationally trained designers seeking Australian credentials, or working professionals looking to formalise and expand their skills. The qualification also serves as an articulation pathway into a Master of Design, allowing students to build progressively toward the highest level of design credentials without committing immediately to a full master's program.
Most Australian institutions require applicants to hold a recognised bachelor's degree in any field to enter a Graduate Diploma in Design. Some institutions specifically require a bachelor's degree in a design-related discipline (such as graphic design, visual communication, architecture, industrial design, or interior design), while others accept graduates from non-design backgrounds, particularly where the program is oriented toward design thinking and business. A credit average (typically equivalent to a 65% weighted average mark) is commonly required, particularly for programs that articulate into a Master of Design. Applicants who completed their undergraduate degree more than ten years ago may be admitted on the basis of five or more years of professional experience in a design or media-related field since graduation. Portfolio submission is compulsory at many institutions — especially for programs with a strong studio focus — and should comprise original recent work demonstrating creative and technical capabilities. Applicants without a bachelor's degree may be considered on a case-by-case basis by the program director, on the basis of a professional portfolio and relevant industry experience, along with a letter of recommendation from a professional referee. International applicants are required to demonstrate English language proficiency, typically through IELTS (usually a minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT, or equivalent tests. Applicants who have completed an Australian Year 12 qualification or previous tertiary study in English are generally exempt from this requirement.
This course may be offered in different study modes depending on the university, campus location, course structure and student type. Students should check the available delivery mode before applying, as not every study option is available at every institution.
On-campus study is the traditional mode of delivery where students attend classes, lectures, tutorials, workshops or seminars at the university campus. This option may suit students who prefer face-to-face learning, access to campus facilities, networking with classmates, practical workshops, group projects and direct engagement with academic staff.
Some universities may offer programs fully online or with online subject options. Online study can be attractive for students who need flexibility due to work, family, location or other commitments. Online study may suit domestic students, working professionals or students who want to study from outside Australia.
Hybrid or blended study usually combines online learning with some on-campus classes, workshops, intensive sessions or practical components. This mode may suit students who want flexibility but still want some face-to-face interaction. The exact structure varies between institutions.
Programs in Australia may have different intake structures depending on the university. The most common intake systems are semester, trimester and block mode.
Many Australian universities follow a two-semester academic calendar. The main intakes are commonly Semester 1 (around February or March) and Semester 2 (around July). Semester-based study usually allows students to complete a set number of subjects over approximately 12 to 14 weeks.
Some universities use a trimester system, which generally provides three study periods a year — around February/March, June/July and October/November. Trimester study may provide more flexibility and may help some students complete their course faster.
Some institutions may offer selected subjects or programs in block mode, where students focus on one subject at a time over a shorter, more intensive teaching period. Block mode may suit students who prefer concentrated learning or working professionals managing study around employment.
Some online or professionally focused programs may offer more frequent start dates or flexible entry points throughout the year. Students should not assume that every course has monthly or multiple intakes — availability depends on the institution, course structure and student type.
Graduates of a Graduate Diploma in Design are prepared for a wide range of creative roles across Australia's expanding design and creative industries. Employers span advertising and branding agencies, architecture and interiors firms, digital and technology companies, government bodies, publishing houses, retail brands, film and media production companies, educational institutions, and in-house creative teams at major corporations. The qualification also positions graduates to work as freelance designers or to establish their own design studios, and serves as a strong academic foundation for those wishing to continue to a Master of Design or pursue design research.

Salaries for design graduates in Australia vary by specialisation, city, and sector, with Sydney and Melbourne offering the highest pay across all experience levels.
Melbourne
Melbourne is Australia's design capital, home to the country's highest concentration of design agencies, creative studios, and fashion and branding firms, with creative workers making up nearly 9% of Victoria's total workforce. The city's vibrant arts precincts, design festivals (including Melbourne Design Week), and thriving agency scene make it the top destination for aspiring designers.
Sydney
Sydney is the highest-paying market for design roles in Australia and offers the largest volume of advertised positions, particularly in digital design, UX, advertising, and brand strategy. The city's global corporations, major media companies, and fast-growing technology sector create abundant opportunities for Graduate Diploma in Design graduates.
Brisbane
Brisbane is a strong and growing regional design hub, with demand for designers increasing across government, retail, construction, and the expanding technology sector. The city's growing population and infrastructure boom — accelerated by the 2032 Olympic Games preparations — are driving fresh demand for environmental, spatial, and communications designers.
Perth
Perth offers design graduates opportunities in sectors including resources, construction, government, and retail branding, with a tightly connected creative community and a lower cost of living compared to Sydney and Melbourne. The city's growing focus on urban renewal and digital transformation is opening new avenues for UX, communication, and spatial designers.
Adelaide
Adelaide has a thriving creative community supported by a strong arts and cultural sector, government investment in design and innovation precincts, and a lower cost of living that makes freelancing and studio establishment accessible for new graduates. The city's design ecosystem spans graphic design, architecture, and product design, with strong links to South Australia's manufacturing and wine industries.
Canberra
Canberra offers a unique market for design graduates, with significant demand from federal government agencies, cultural institutions (including national museums and galleries), and public-sector communications teams that require professional design services. Salary levels at junior and mid-career stages are comparable to Melbourne, and the city's stable employment base provides reliable career pathways.
